Σάββατο 23 Απριλίου στο Ανόβερο η κοινωνία των πολιτών διαμαρτύρεται λίγο πριν την άφιξη Ομπάμα| Obama and Merkel in Hannover: Stop TTIP & CETA! For a just global economy!

Obama and Merkel in Hannover: Stop TTIP&CETA! For a just global economy!
US-President Obama and Chancellor Merkel are opening this year’s industry fair in Hannover. They are planning to advance negotiations on TTIP— a trade deal between the US and the EU that undermines our democracy and rule of law.
This year the European Commission is also planning to get the CETA agreement with Canada ratified by the European Council and European Parliament. CETA is a blueprint for TTIP. With CETA in place big corporations would be able to sue EU-member states via their Canadian subsidiaries for compensation over lost profits.
That’s why we are taking our protest to the streets. A broad alliance of civil society groups will support a march with ten thousands of people on Saturday, 23 April in Hannover - just before Obama’s arrival.
We are part of a transnational protest movement: we are fighting side by side with our friends and partners in Canada and the US against trade deals that put corporate interests above everything else. On both sides of the Atlantic we are fighting for a trade and investment policy that goes hand in hand with protecting the environment, social standards and supports sustainable development all over the world.
In particular we want a trade and investment policy that:
  • supports and nourishes our democracy and rule of law and allows governments on federal, local and communal level to govern independently of corporate interests
  • strengthens national and international standards for the protection of human rights and the environment
  • prompts the development of a just global economic order
We need social and ecological pillars in a globalized world. TTIP and CETA are heading in the wrong direction: Ecological and social regulations are being sacrificed for free trade. Special rights for investors threaten the independence of our parliaments.
Both trade deals put pressure on public and non-profit services, public service, cultural variety and public education. TTIP and CETA are the wrong answer to the financial crisis, they strengthen transnational corporations and weaken small and medium-sized businesses, including in agriculture. TTIP and CETA are excluding countries of the global South instead of working together to overcome global problems like world hunger, climate change and inequality.
That is why we are fighting for international agreements that
  • strengthen protection of our environmental, social data and consumer protection standards instead of weakening them
  • strengthens workers’ rights such as the core norms of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) instead of undermining them
  • promote public and non-profit services and public service instead of weakening them
  • advance cultural variety and public education programs instead of considering them a barrier to trade
  • promote sustainable agriculture and animal welfare instead of GMOs and industrial farming
  • limit the power of corporations and the financial sector instead of increasing it
  • have a global outlook instead of excluding the majority of people transparent and
  • are negotiated transparently and in public instead of in secret and behind closed doors
This is what our movement stands for and why we are taking to the streets of Hannover on Saturday 23 April.
